This unique and beautiful eco-cottage has its own private sea-view balcony and embodies the themes of recycling, ocean conservation and sustainability.  Half of your room-rate goes towards supporting Reefolution – an organisation based at the FireFly Eco Retreat that does coral reef restoration in Wasini Channel for the benefit of nature and the local communities that protect these new coral reefs.
Here’s how the cycle of sustainability works:
Parrot Fish not only clean bad algae from corals, they eat the coral and their poo becomes coral sand.
Coral Sand is the sand you find on tropical beaches. It contains silica which is the traditional ingredient for making glass – including glass bottles.
Glass Bottles are used and discarded by many tourists visiting the Kenyan coast. There is no recycling system for them.
Reefolution and the local communities recycle the glass bottles into artificial reef structures that are used to regrow coral and create new reefs.
Coral Reefs are the shelter and breeding grounds of the ocean.  No corals, no fish. No fish, no corals.
Parrot Fish happily sleep in the coral shelters that Reefolution and the communities build together.  They clean the corals, keeping them healthy.   The circle is complete.
By staying in the Bottle Cottage, you not only support the work that Reefolution and the communities are doing but get your own bottle experience through the unique lamps , lights and décor that decorate the cottage.
We hope to welcome you soon.
